| The sharp-shinned hawk AKA "Sharpie" is well known for this kind of behavior. If you're accustomed to seeing a lot of small birds in an area (your yard for example), and you notice an uncommon peace and quiet, very likely you have a sharpie hanging out in the area.

Sharpies are small, cool hawks, though they are a vexation to people who try to attract cardinals, finches, etc. Also known as the "chicken hawk." Hey, remember the old Warner Bros. cartoon with that little loud-mouth hawk who was always trying to eat Foghorn Leghorn? He was a sharpie.
