"The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."  Probably Nov. before new FotP, but it is coming. promise.

I did manage to finally post some new sketchbook stuff.

I'm happy to report that Adhouse Books has asked me to be in their next anthology, Project: Romantic.  Their last two anthologies were great and were very well received.

The Glue Network benefit show went well.  They raised money for hurricane victims and development projects in Nkhoma, Malawi.

Did you see last week's Conan O'Brien ALL U2 show?  It was awesome, and Bono got to talk a bit about The One Campaign to eliminate poverty.  I like what he said about how for the first time in human history we have the resources to end poverty everywhere, and as such, we should see the job as an adventure, and not as a burden.

Check out The One Campaign

And did you see last night's Celebrity Secrets U2 edition on Conan?  My favorite was the Edge: "When Irish people talk fast... I can't understand them either."

Andy's new site is up.  Andy art directed.  I did the animation and site construction.  It's so fun.  And more coming...

that's all for now.  see you soon.

New site is here.  There is new content in the art section.

I'm working a lot, hence the lack of new stuff.  Sorry.  I really want to get to the new episodes of FotP, but it might be a while.

Last month Kleeman and Mike for Africa raised over $1300 to help the crisis in Niger!  Thanks to all who gave!  Everyone who gave will get an official receipt from CARE USA.  I'm still offering the comic book to anyone who gives.  Details in the KnM for Africa section.

A local weekly had a story on several people's "desert island discs" (the disc/discs you'd take if forced to live on a desert island).  The writers always have to list some obscure jazz album, a Rolling Stone Magazine choice, and/or a ridiculously specific arrangement of some 18th century composer which normal people use to go to sleep.  You get a lot of extra points if you list an album that's out of print.  Someone wrote, "Trouble Man is the soundtrack to a 1972 blaxploitation film that's no longer in print."  I have a feeling that album sits at the bottom of a box in a storage closet at the writer's house.

The thing is, the list of discs that people tell us they would take to a desert island is different than the list of discs they would actually take.  People act differently when they know they're being observed, just like quantum mechanics.

But here's my list for Aug. 2005.  The fact that you're observing this list makes me want to put in Joy Division's Closer or a Sonic Youth album even though I don't even own a Sonic Youth album.  But I'm going to try to give you the REAL list.

1.  The Gloria Record, A Lull in Traffic EP
2.  The Ocean Blue, Cerulean
3.  Sufjan Stevens, Come on Feel the Illinoise (even though it's early to call)
4.  U2, The Joshua Tree
5.  Mineral, End Serenading
6.  Mojave 3, Excuses For Travelers
7.  Smoking Popes, Destination Failure
8.  Radiohead, Kid A
9.  Red House Painters, 1st self-titled
10.  The Stone Roses, The Stone Roses

"First you look so strong, then you faaade awaaay..."
Mark Gardener of RIDE played an acoustic set yesterday at M Theory Records here in San Diego.  I loved Ride and "Vapour Trail" off the first album is one of my favourite songs ever.  EVER.  I got there a nerdy hour and a half early and Mark was doing the sound check.  As I walked up, there were like three people there and he started playing Vapour Trail.  It was the greatest.  And it's funny to think I would never have known about this gig had I not been in M Theory a couple weeks ago and happened to glance up at the grease board that listed the in-store appearance.  Like, what if I had just walked up to M Theory on a Saturday afternoon to look for a CD and MARK GARDENER of RIDE was playing Vapour Trail!  It would not have been pretty.  There would have been soiled pants and ambulances involved.

Mark Gardener of RIDE.  Talking to him, you can tell Mark is genuinely a really nice guy.

Add to that amazing show Rob Dickinson of one of my all time favourite bands The Catherine Wheel played a set as well!  His set was awesome.  He played mostly his new stuff and the CW song "Future Boy."  I would have left much happier, though, had I not seen the set list.  I don't like to ruin the surprise, but it was right in front of me and I was stoked when I saw what was listed as the last song.  Well, someone from their group told them they had to cut it short.  I don't know, plane to catch or something.  But they ended up not playing the last song, and the last long was BLACK METALLIC.  Crappy.  Adam Franklin of Swervedriver also played a set and it was awesome.

Rob Dickinson

While I'm at it, the Chris Simpson show Aug 3 was awesome.  Chis is one of the most gracious guys I've ever met.  He should hang out with Mark Gardener.

*note: I used the English spelling for "favourite" out of consideration for the UK-based performers.  I will go back to spelling it the normal way after this post.

THEY WERE BLACK JELLYFISH!
A couple weeks ago, I was out at Scripps and found myself dodging beautiful swarms of dark red jellyfish.   I had never seen that kind before, but I didn't think much of it. I didn't grow up here.  Well, SD Union Tribune had an article today on them (called Black Jellyfish).  They're quite rare and mysterious and this is only the fifth time they've ever been known to appear in San Diego!  If I had known that I wouldn've tried harder to get stung by one.  One guy paddled by me and said he had already been hit four times.  Lucky.  I was out today and chatted with a lifegueard who was surfing.  I asked him about bat rays which I love, and he didn't think we had bat rays, but i see TONS of bat rays and I love them.  This necessitates a trip to Birch Aquarium.  Maybe this weekend.  They have black jellies at Birch.

Sorry for the last minute notice, but Chris Simpson (The Gloria Record, Mineral [the music in the KnM surfing cartoon]) is playing LA tonight.  Hotel Cafe. 7pm.

The new website stuff is taking longer than I thought, but don't worry.  It'll definitely not be worth the wait.

Keep cool my babies!  New stuff on the way.  New website, new animation, new FotP.

I'm WAY behind on emails and sticker requests.  Will catch up soon.

Thanks to all who came out to Comic-Con!  Thanks to all who came back and said hi.  Much love to Hugo, Grace, Dave, and Sean for all the help.
